Sheltering

Sheltering (Among the Elements) is a series of exploratory architectural models created at the MacDowell Artist Residency.

To shelter among the elements runs counter to the architectural principle to provide protection from the uncertainty of wilderness. To invite the elements in - whether these are physical objects like trees and rocks, or phenomena like wind and rain - becomes a reorientation of sheltering-in-(a)-place, and calling into question our associations with comfort vs discomfort, belonging vs foreignness, and boundaries of what we consider home.

The models - Centers of Mass, Rooms for A Rock, and Precarious Balance, centered around found materials and objects gathered within the grounds of MacDowell, culminating in a table top installation within the Alexander Studio.
